Description

Almost 8hours of "photometric" skies with stable 3.5arsec seeing.   Certainly what passes for a good night around these parts.  Despite a small hiccup when my A/G camera fell out of the guidescope*, I managed to get almost 7hours on integration on NGC55 aka the Whale galaxy.

I must admit I don't see it, processing this galaxy required a lot of care (almost certainly more than I was prepared to give it!) given its rather delicate and tenuous appearance.  Also I had to fight with the squished Huntsman spider affect round the bright stars.  All sorts of masking + curves/histogram transformation, plus wavelet suppression needed to suppress these horrible halos.**  Fortunately this galaxy - at least in my view - benefits from not being "over-exposed".

In the end, I think neither my site or I are cut out for galaxy imaging.

* I have given up on the OAG at 1600mm focal length with the RC8.  My tracking rms has always been around 0.5-0.7 arcsec.  In swapping back to a 240mm guide scope, I managed 0.3arcsec rms.  Now, I know I should be guiding a 1600mm focal length with a 240mm guide scope - but I am binning.  I just need to remember to screw the guide scope camera in *firmly* to avoid literal "Drop-outs" at the zenith.

** Does anyone else get large spidery halos with the Optolong broadband filters?  The halos are worse in the blue (although this maybe just my camera sensitivity in the blue picking up more or them.  Really hoping I don't have to go to the expense of Chroma/Astrodon...
